Hillsboro was the first town in Pocahontas County to incorporate in 1886. Hillsboro is probably best known as the birthplace of author Pearl S. Buck who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1932 for her novel The Good Earth and the Nobel Prize for Literature for the biographies of her parents, The Exile andThe Fighting Angel.
