The town of Hillsboro is located in the southern end of Pocahontas County, West Virginia and is the county’s oldest incorporated town. Hillsboro was chartered in 1886. The town is named after Richard Hill who came from North Carolina to settle near the present day Lobelia. It was also here that Reverend Joseph Brown chartered his school, Hillsboro Academy, in 1842. The name of the town was changed to Academy in 1852, when the post office was established to avoid confusion with an already named Hillsboro, Virginia. It was later changed back to Hillsboro.
